چکیده

Most whiteness formulas currently in use satisfactorily characterize the appearance of commercial whiteness. However, when these formulas are applied to colored samples they are generally unsuccessful in assessing tinted samples with chromaticities placed on the borders of white colors. In this study, new formulas expressing whiteness are proposed. These are compared with CIE, Hunter and Ganz whiteness formulas and TAPPI brightness, through perceptual evaluation and instrumental measurements and analyses. Both of the proposed whiteness formulas matched well with 48 randomly selected observer assessments for printed samples, the one that is based on a maximum at neutral white being in a lesser degree. On the other hand, CIE, Hunter and Ganz whiteness formulas had a poorer correlation with the observers’ evaluation. TAPPI brightness also agreed well with the observers’ assessments, but it cannot be strictly correct because of its reliance on a narrow wavelength range. Relatively saturated chroma values are associated with the maximum whitenesses with the evaluated CIE, Hunter and Ganz whiteness formulas. The proposed whiteness formulas don’t suffer from this abnormality. * Corresponding author. Tel.: (334) 466-2028 E-mail address: [email protected]

Modelling the effect of simultaneous contrast on perceived whiteness

The perceived colour from a surface does not only depend on its optical properties and the illumination. Several studies have demonstrated the simultaneous contrast effect that makes the appearance of coloured patches depend on neighbouring colours. In this study the perceived whiteness of white patches surrounded by induction fields of different shades was evaluated by asking observers to give...

Effect of Chromatic Components on Facial Skin Whiteness

Although the color measurement of facial skin becomes more common in dermatology and cosmetics, little is known about the relationship between subjective color perception and colorimetric values in facial skin. In this study, the possible relationships among perceived whiteness and the metric lightness, chroma and hue angle of Japanese females’ facial skin color were investigated. First, the pe...

Whiteness and Fluorescence in Paper Perception and Optical Modelling

This thesis is about modelling and predicting the perceived whiteness of plain paper from the paper composition, including fluorescent whitening agents. This includes psycho-physical modelling of perceivedwhiteness frommeasurable light reflectance properties, and physical modelling of light scattering and fluorescence from the paper composition. Existing models are first tested and improvements...

Color measurements on prints containing fluorescent whitening agents

Papers with a slightly blue shade are, at least among a majority of observers, perceived as whiter than papers having a more neutral color. Therefore, practically all commercially available printing papers contain bluish dyes and fluorescent whitening agents (FWA) to give the paper a whiter appearance. Furthermore, in the Paper Industry, the most frequently used measure for paper whiteness is t...

The Dependency of Colorimetric Characteristics of Black Fabrics to the Whiteness Attribute of Substrate

In this paper the effect of whiteness attribute of white substrates on blackness property of black coated fabrics is investigated. To this aim, four cotton fabrics with different whiteness and tint attributes are used as white substrates. To prepare a set of black samples, various concentrations of four color pigments, i.e., red, green, blue and yellow, were mixed with the black one and applied...
